The Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) is working towards building a healthier India. It is helping to address the limited institutional and systems capacity in India by strengthening education and training, advancing research and technology and facilitating policy and practice in the area of Public Health. PHFI is headquartered in New Delhi with national presence through its constituent units of regional Indian Institutes of Public Health (IIPHs) and Centers of Applied Research in core public health themes. Department of Health Promotion is one of the units within the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) primarily focusing on Original Research; Advocacy; and advancing support to the Indian Government at National and various State levels in strengthening capacity, policies, and evidence for health promotion. The specialized target areas of the unit are Adolescent health; prevention and management of non-communicable diseases and associated risk factors, emphasizing sound evidence-based strategies and well-planned approach to implementation and evaluation.
Project Brief:
PHFI Health Promotion in collaboration with UNICEF aims to reinvigorate efforts to improve the nutrition of school-age children through a focus on ‘school nutrition environments’ and how these can be optimized to prevent all forms of malnutrition, including overweight, and obesity, and instill a healthy dietary practice in daily life. To enable this, the Nutrition Environment Assessment Toolkit for Schools (NEAT-S) will be adopted for schools to better understand school nutrition environments. The aim is to adopt global tools, and adapt for use in India. Collecting and analyzing data on nutrition environment in and around schools will help in identifying priority actions and opportunities for improving school nutrition environments in the country. Synthesizing and strengthening efforts centered on the five themes of Let’s Fix Our Food with the overarching goal of leveraging experiential data from adolescents and school systems to enhance initiatives in designing policies for fostering a nutritious school food environment. 2. To contextualize and standardize tool to assess school and in-around school food and nutrition environment. 3. Technical support is provided to convene and coordinate with NITI Aayog and other stakeholders to develop a comprehensive National Nutrition Strategy that encompasses all age groups, including children, adolescents, and the elderly. 4. To empower adolescents, schools, and educators to promote a nutritious food environment by equipping adolescents and amplifying the voices and experiences of young individuals, fostering healthier foodenvironments for India’s burgeoning population of children and adolescents.
